Are Kia cars and SUVs reliable?

There are a lot of considerations that go into the decision to buy or lease a vehicle. For many potential owners, reliability is going to be at, or near the top of their list of reasons to choose one automaker over another. Kia is in the enviable position of being one of the most reliable vehicle manufacturers operating in the United States. This isn’t just puffery made to entice a buyer with empty promises. We have the data to back up any answers to the question, ‘Are Kia cars and SUVs reliable?’ A recently released J.D Power and Associates Initial Quality Study placed Kia in the top of all non-luxury automotive brands. Drilling down to another level, we can see that a quartet of popular models fared well on an individual basis.

“Being ranked at the top of J.D. Power’s U.S. Initial Quality Study among all mass market brands once is a tremendous honor, but capturing this leadership position for five consecutive years unequivocally affirms Kia’s commitment to quality and the ownership experience,” Michael Cole, chief operating officer and EVP, Kia Motors America, said in a press release. The J.D. Power and Associates 2019 U.S. Initial Quality Study examined more than 250 vehicles across more than 25 vehicle classes, from just about every non-luxury automotive brand to identify how many issues were reported in the first 90 days of ownership. Kia vehicles were able to be named as the most reliable in the study by reporting 70 problems per 100 vehicles, a two-point decrease in reported issues from last year. This is the fifth consecutive year that Kia has been named as the most reliable brand in the J.D. Power Initial Quality Study.

On an individual model level, the Kia Rio, Kia Forte, Kia Sportage and Kia Soul were all ranked among the top 10 most reliable vehicles overall. Examining the few of the top performers in each class had several Kia vehicles outshining their competitors. The Rio was the high-water mark in the small car segment; with the Forte, Sportage and Sedona topping the compact car, small SUV and minivan classes, respectively.
