What is the difference between EV, PHEV, and Hybrid?

If you are shopping for your future vehicle, navigating the different labels of vehicles can be a bit tricky. Thankfully, it’s more a case of needing to remember what everything stands for than anything else. So, what is the difference between EV, PHEV, and Hybrid models? Let’s check it out!

What are the Kia engine options?

To begin, the EV stands for Electric Vehicle. If you drive one of these, such as the Kia Niro EV, you won’t have to stop at a traditional gas station, as this type of vehicle does not have a gas engine. Instead, it is powered by a battery that you then charge once it runs out of juice. Examples of EV models in the Kia lineup include the Kia Niro EV and the Kia Soul EV.

Step into a Kia PHEV model and you’ll find your vehicle primarily powered by a battery, similar to the EV models. However, PHEV models, also known as Plug-In Hybrids, also have a small gas tank to back them up. So, you will primarily charge your vehicle like an EV model, but occasionally you’ll need to run to the regular gas station to fill up that gas tank. Think of it as an EV model supported by a gas tank. Examples of these types of models are the Kia Niro PHEV.

Hybrid models are similar to the PHEV models, however instead of primarily running on battery power, these models primarily run on a regular gas tank, but they also have a small battery that helps give you more miles to the gallon. So, gas, but supported by a battery. Examples of these models are the Kia Sorento Hybrid.

And then, of course, you have the regular gas models that are just a gas engine, such as the Kia Sedona, Kia K5, etc.
