Is Kia going to bring the Seltos to the US?
We might not be the most objective reporters in the world, but we think Kia has one of the most enviable lineups of crossover SUVs in the entire global automotive industry. A few of our product experts were looking up some information on the internet to answer a customer question and stumbled across some interesting news about a potential new crossover SUV called the Kia Seltos. So, is Kia going to bring the Seltos to the US? That isn’t terribly clear at this point, but we don’t see any reason to definitively say no. Kia has positioned the Seltos as a new member of the highly competitive compact SUV market. If the automaker takes this path, the new Seltos could be on a collision course with the existing Sportage. Let’s take a look at what we know so far.

As of right now, Kia appears to be launching the Seltos in India only, but they have alluded to global availability later this year. Automakers don’t add new models to their American rosters without some kind of introduction at one of the major auto shows like Detroit, Chicago or New York. So if it does become available at Kia of Mankato, it won’t be for quite some time.
“The Seltos is an important car for Kia as it will play a central role in the expansion of our global footprint, and especially in a priority market like India,” Han-Woo Park, President and CEO, Kia Motors Corporation, said in a press release. “We’ve adapted our strengths in design, quality and technology to fulfill the needs of customers in the Indian market.”
Technology will be what sets the Seltos apart from its siblings in the Kia inventory as well as competitors at large. The new compact crossover’s center stack can be equipped with a 10.25-inch touchscreen that will be able to run two apps at the same time with split-screen capability. Additional refinement will be added to its ergonomically-friendly interior by the Sound Mood Lighting system.
When the Kia Seltos goes on sale in India, it will offer few different engine options, including turbocharged gasoline- and naturally aspirated diesel-powered options. The stated horsepower ratings are estimated to be between 134 and 174 horsepower.
Diesel engines are a notoriously tough sell in the United States, so we don’t think that will come across the pond. If the Seltos is available here, even as a rebadged Sportage, it will likely use the existing powertrain equipment found in other American Kia vehicles.
