The Sorento receives several updates for the 2024 model year, including a new trim level. The new Sorento X-Pro slots between the 2-row Sportage X-Pro and the large 3-row Telluride X-Pro. Though not ready for rock hopping, it is the most off-road capable Sorento yet and should be a welcome choice for families that occasionally venture off the pavement. This Kia of Mankato post explains why.

The X-Pro’s full name is Kia Sorento X-Pro SX Prestige, making it a variant of the top-level SX Prestige trim level. It includes the tough-appearing bumpers and skid plates of the X-Line but adds true capability with 17-inch rims wrapped in BF Goodrich Trail Terrain tires. The tread of these all-terrain tires is inspired by the brand’s significantly more hard-core KO2 off-road tires but uses a more on-pavement inner construction and rubber compound. As a result, the tread offers more traction on unpaved surfaces, and the higher sidewalls add protection and absorb the impact of obstructions both on and off the road. At the same time, they maintain the Sorento’s city/highway/combined mpg of 20 / 27 / 23 and add little in the way of tire noise. Enhancements to the cooling system increase the towing capacity by 1,000 pounds to a maximum of 4,500.

The X-Pro powertrain is the turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-4, which produces a formidable 281 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque. The engine is combined with an 8-speed wet dual-clutch transmission. The power is then distributed to all four wheels through Kia’s torque-vectoring all-wheel drive with a center-locking differential.

Like most 2024 Sorento models, the X-Pro receives the all-new interior featuring the 12.3-inch infotainment touch screen and 12.3-inch driver information display in a single curved housing. It is operated by the new ccNC (Connected Car Navigation Cockpit) user interface. It features wireless smartphone compatibility, increased processing power, and a new menu system, including the ability to access all main menu items from anywhere with a simple hand swipe. Below is a handsome bank of HVAC vents, and below is still a bank of touch-sensitive climate system controls.

As a variant of the SX Prestige, the X-Pro is very well-equipped with a 14-way power driver’s seat, including a 4-way power lumbar adjustment, power thigh extension, and memory, along with a 10-way front passenger seat. Both seats are heated and ventilated, the 2nd-row outboard seats are also heated, and all the seating surfaces are embossed and perforated leather. Other features include a 12-speaker Bose audio system, a surround-view monitor, and 2nd-row integrated window shades.

When compared to its bigger 3-row sibling, the Sorrento is about three inches narrower, making it a 6-seater, with three rows of two. While 8 inches shorter, it only loses an inch in 3rd-row legroom, but the big difference is in cargo capacity. The Sorento has 13 cubic feet behind the 3rd row compared to 21 cubic feet for the Telluride. Thus, the Sorrento is ideal if your need for a third row is occasional, without everyone bringing along a bunch of stuff. If you need to fill the 3rd row much more often and carry everyone’s things, the Telluride may be best for you.
